Avant Garde Geisha Photoshoot Captured by Kenalsworld
Fashion and beauty photography like traditional visual arts has been calling my name and drawing my heart. My passion to create photographs that others find compelling to share comes from the deepest part of me. However, in this new vision brought to life I could not do it with an amazing man and person, who also shares much passion for fashion and beauty in general. This person is Omar Rodriguez.
Omar is a superstar stylist; he is also the founder of O Styles based in Omaha, Nebraska. Although he is Mr. international majority of the time and always traveling city to city, he stills spare time to collaborate with me an aspiring fashion and beauty photographer. This recent Avant Garde Geisha photoshoot was our fourth photoshoot together and as we continue to work together I am sure the results will continue to result in phenomenal creations.
Like myself Omar Rodriguez is an artist skilled in his craft in styling hair along with applying makeup to the utmost detail.
Whenever we are working together on a creative photoshoot with an artistic direction I do my best not to miss a moment of the preparation that Omar does, while working on the models before the shoots. I am a spectator that enjoy sitting at his studio viewing him work on the model as if he is an artist painting on a canvas (the models face).

Again, Omar tells a story through his craft in makeup artistry along with hair styling. Having done many fashion shows, live events and Latin musicians such as Ricky Martin Omar truly perfects the work that he does. Whether it is a slight strand of hair that is not in place during the photoshoots whenever he is present serves as a second pair of eyes for me as a photographer along with the creative coordinator for all of our shoots together Raechel Dennis.
In preparation even for the photoshoot he watched the Memoirs of Geisha for inspiration along with did some research even on the history on Geisha’s. According to the Urban Dictionary the author of Geisha; A Life Mineko Iwasaki a former Geisha earlier in her life described the practice of Mizuage as a coming-of-age ceremony, and apparently there was some selling of the virginity that went on in association with that ritual ceremony in the pleasure district a long time ago. However, that has never been true for the geisha. For the geisha, it was simply when they were becoming a young woman, similar to a sweet 16 in the West, and it was symbolized by the change in hairstyle, into a more womanly, grown-up hairstyle.
Whether the Geisha’s were formed and developed for prostitution is true or not; over time many cultures have been corrupted in many different ways. Whatever the intended purpose was originally could have easily been altered because during the early 16th and 17th century men had so much authority over women in the East and still do in the present time that we live in, but it is not nearly close to what it once was.

Since I first saw the Memoirs Of A Geisha in 2005 I often wondered what it would have been to lived in an era where you had beautiful Geisha women all around; then again the possibility of a young Haitian man in Japan was very unlikely back then.
The model that we had the photoshoot with is called Nancy Pham and she is one of the most stunning woman I have working with. This avant garde photoshoot was our second shoot together and was a very successful one. We plan to do a sequel that is going to blow many people out of the water.

This collage below is of some of the shots from our first photoshoot together and since I first saw her I knew that I was going to shoot with her again. Although she has a Vietnamese background Nancy was superb and very open to doing to Geisha avant garde photoshoot with me without hesitation.
One of the things I enjoy about shooting beauty and fashion is that I get to meet young women like Nancy Pham who also become good friends.

The sequel Geisha photoshoot that we are going to do is going to be somewhat surreal and honestly I am too excited to wait, but it will be another very special photoshoot.
Be sure to like O STYLES on Facebook because truly without Omar this vision may not have been possible and be as complete as it is.
