Simple Octopus Drawing by Kenal Louis

The following artwork is a simple Octopus drawing by artist Kenal Louis. It the most creative and beautiful octopus drawing created in this portfolio. Done using an ink pen.

Using an ink pen on paper the artwork was completed in the line art style. Lately, I’ve been creating a lot of digital paintings, circle line drawings, and human heart drawings. With this artwork, I wanted to challenge myself to create something different.

The Simple Octopus Drawing With Symbolism

In creating the octopus illustration I wanted it to be a very symbolic piece, but still simplistic. I did not want the artwork to be bombarded with details and symbolic imagery.

Since I was 4 years old I’ve been creating art. It all started with drawing and creating sketches. Eventually drawing led me to paint, produce digital art and even working full-time as a graphic designer for a very established sculptor. Although I had been drawing since I was that young, I never once drew a picture of an octopus.

This was either done because of laziness, fear of the creature; fear that I could not draw something good or something else. I am still uncertain as to why I never created an octopus drawing before. So, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post I wanted to expand my creative portfolio.

The first octopus drawing in my art portfolio created in 2016. Continue reading to learn about the thought process and the symbolism I creatively implied in the drawing’s composition.

Since creating the octopus drawing I've drawn many other artworks of the interesting creature.

If you follow me on Instagram under the Kenal Louis page, you can see many of the processes of my drawings and other illustrations. On the social media page, I share a lot of sequence, step by step, and short videos of me working on the art I create.

The original octopus line drawing was done on a canary yellow construction paper. This is also the first time in a long time since I’ve drawn on colored paper.

Truly, the only reason I drew the artwork on the yellow paper is that I ran out of white paper around my art space. Rather than drive to the nearest art store to get the paper, I decided to use what I already have sitting somewhere.

As an artist, it’s not always a matter of buying expensive art supplies. Sometimes it’s good to just use what you already have at your disposal. It costs much less to create art with supplies you have just sitting around. However, it takes having an open mind to realize that you have objects, materials and miscellaneous things you could use to produce art.

Thought Process Behind The Octopus Drawing

The artwork I create especially with the use of lines, I tend to want to be fluid. By fluid I mean, full with motion directed by the line movement in the artworks. In the past, I’ve created line art that is both subjective and non-subjective. I’ve applied this mindset to the line drawings I do a lot lately.

Symbolism In The Royal Octopus Drawing

Simple Octopus Drawing Anchor

Symbolism is something the master painters like Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo created during the renaissance art movement. I love art history because there is so much to learn about the evolution of art. To watch, read, and digest the wealth of information relating to art in fullness is impossible.

The Anchor In The Royal Octopus Drawing

In the octopus drawing, you will see an anchor, which represents foundation. In the artwork, I also have Chinese character symbols from strength and intellect. I wanted the line drawing of the octopus to represent the creatures many symbolic meanings.

The Key In The Royal Octopus Drawing

Simple Octopus Drawing Key

An object like the key represents the power to unlock certain things. Physically the key allows us to be able to unlock a door. Intelligence is also something needed in order to open a door.

If you give a 2-3-year-old child a key, unless they have seen it used before somehow, they will have no clue what to do with the key.

However, once they’ve reached a point to where they know (have intelligence) on how they can use the key they can open doors.

This could even be a life lesson. In our lives, we require knowledge and wisdom to become successful or achieve the things we have set as goals. Without the intelligence gained from knowledge and wisdom, we will be completely lost.

3 Awesome Flexibility & Intelligence Quotes

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” – Albert Einstein

“Despite my firm convictions, I have always been a man who tries to face facts and to accept the reality of life as new experience and new knowledge unfolds. I have always kept an open mind, a flexibility that must go hand in hand with every form of the intelligent search for truth. ” – Malcolm X (Brainy Quote)

“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” – Henry Ford

No one is a living book of information. Yet, I believe as an artist it is very important to know about art history in some shape and form.

Art History Quote by Kenal Louis

Here is an original quote. “Without history, we would not know what art is. Without art, we would not know much about our history.”

I thought of these words for the quote one day while just working and thinking about history and its relevance to us. Because of our history we are able to know about the past and great developments that have taken place in the world and in art.

Through history, art was also discovered and it played a major role in helping us learn about other cultures. Through art, we’ve learned more about the Greeks, Chinese emperors, Egyptians, and religious principles established at the beginning of civilization.

Here is another quote. “The tools we use are only as good to us as our skills allow us to be able to use them.”

Tools Used To Create The Octopus Drawing Artwork

I have experience doing some beauty and fashion photography in the past. I recall after only my second year of experience with photography, I created some beautiful fashion and editorial photographs. People would always come to me to compliment my photography. And when I would reveal to them I had only been shooting for two years them appeared to be shocked.

In two years I invested a lot of personal time to develop my skills in photography. I bought photography books, DVD training tutorials, and photography subscriptions to build my understanding of photography.

Books I Purchased on Amazon

Here are two books that helped me with developing my visual standards with my fashion photography and editorial photography.

  • PHOTO:BOX
  • Features over 150 of the world’s greatest photographers in different photography categories.
  • Coming Into Fashion
  • A great book about fashion history, style, designers and the fashion industry.

So after investing money, time and practice into growing as a photographer, I got better. Allen Iverson is a famed basketball player and he is also very famous online still today for his “Practice. Practice. Are we talkin’ bout practice.” Video.
Yes, practice indeed makes perfect. This idea of perfect though is defined by us and our standards.

Never Stop Drawing If You Are An Artist

If you feel that you are not a good artist, continue to practice and over time you will get better. One of the biggest pet-peeves I have is when I hear people say “I can’t draw” or “I could never be this good.” When I hear this, the first words of affirmation that come out of my mouth is “Yes you can draw.” I think these types of people have a mindset that does not enable them to grow in all aspects of their life.

Yes, You Can Draw Too!

I believe the moment you say you cannot do something you just limited yourself.
